Before the jukebox became a coin-operated music box, people had been playing with recorded and live music. But the first coin-operated player was invented by the Managers of the Pacific Phonograph Co. (record player manufacturing company), Louis Glass and William S. Arnold in 1889.
It's unclear but the name "Jukebox" is said to have derived from 'Juke Joints' or 'Juke Houses' in the early 1900s. This is because many people met in these locations for drinks, music and dancing.
