Kokyu is the only one played with a bow from traditional Japanese string instruments.
Shamisen is a lute instrument with 3 strings and it has a very long neck like the kokyu.
Sho is a woodwind instrumented used often in "Gagaku" - Japan's imperial court music. Its sound is said to resemble the phonexi's call, and even have a design to look like the stretched wings of a phoenix.
