It can include the instrument being struck or scraped by a tool, it can be shaked, rubbed or any other action that creates vibration.
The word "percussion" is from a Latin term: "Percussio" which means to beat or strike, in a musical sense. Many anthropologists explain that percussion instruments were the first musical instruments created since sound can be made from our hands, feet, sticks, rocks, and other common objects like sticks
